What may I do here tonight?

Parking is not sleeping overnight, and sleeping overnight is not camping. The law distinguishes the three things, and so does the fine. Each municipality, with what the written text says, which layer prevails and what a mistake costs.

The mistake that costs money

Parking

The vehicle occupies the road. This is governed by traffic law and the municipal traffic by-law.

Sleeping in the vehicle overnight

Inside, asleep, with nothing deployed. Many by-laws treat this separately from parking.

Camping

Putting out levelling jacks, awning, table or chocks. Here the rule changes, and so usually does the amount of the fine.

Assuming that the second follows from the first is the most expensive mistake made in this area. That is why each municipality resolves the three acts separately.

That third number is the honest one and the one that hurts: of 95.560 municipalities, we have read the municipality's own by-law for 2.161. For the rest we say what prevails above it —the national rule, the protected area, the coast— and we also say that we have not seen the local by-law. We prefer that to painting a «yes» in 95.560 colours. Coverage, municipality by municipality →
