Sleeping in a motorhome in Belgium

The three legal facts are distinct: parking, sleeping inside and camping. The mistake that costs money is assuming that the second follows from the first.

Sleep inside

Sleep inside
YES — No general limit. The 8 h max. in built-up areas applies only to vehicles over 7.5 t.
Fine 50 € – 250 €
  • chocks and stabilising legs: end of parking
There is NO Belgian federal rule on sleeping in the vehicle: it is allowed if the vehicle is legally parked and the municipality does not forbid it. Highway Code (AR 01-12-1975) + municipal by-laws · verified on 2026-08-08

YES, WITH LIMITS — Within built-up areas: MAXIMUM 8 CONSECUTIVE HOURS for motor vehicles, vehicle combinations and trailers whose MAM exceeds 7.5 tonnes, except in places provided with sign E9a, E9c or E9d. Motor vehicles not in a roadworthy condition and trailers (in general): maximum 24 consecutive hours on the public road. Advertising vehicles: maximum 3 consecutive hours.
  • A WEIGHT criterion (7.5 t MAM), not length: the Belgian federal code has no parking rule based on length, so a 7 m, 3,500 kg motorhome does not fall under art. 27.5.2. The 8-hour rule only operates 'dans les agglomerations'. The 24 h limit of art. 27.5.1 covers REMORQUES with no further condition, so an unhitched caravan is limited to 24 h even though the towing vehicle is not. CRITICAL TIME WARNING, verified in the consolidated text on Justel itself: the AR of 01-12-1975 is 'abroge pour la Region de Bruxelles-Capitale le 01-09-2026' (ARR 2024-08-29/06) and 'abroge dans le futur pour la Region Wallonne' (ARR 2025-07-17/20). From 1 September 2026 the Brussels rule must be cited against the regional regulation, not against this AR. For camping/sleeping overnight there is no federal rule: it is a regional (Wallonia, Flanders, Brussels) and municipal competence, and the official URL could not be located within the search budget.

NO
  • the PHYSICAL ACTION, not the fact of sleeping, is what triggers the offence
  • as soon as chocks are placed behind the wheels, the legs are lowered or the awning is extended, it is already camping
